Dc2Trill Drops Classic New Album, ‘Family Matters’

Texas rapper Dc2trill has been dishing out music for over eight years now, but 2023 looks to be his biggest year yet. Stepping into the spotlight in 2021 as one of Lil Yachty’s first signings on his Concrete Boys label, Trill continues to rise up as a leader of hip-hop’s post-SoundCloud era. Maintaining a lowkey persona, Dillan Caster has clearly earned his stripes within the industry, as he’s been known to hang around the Quality Control crew and even Drake as of late. But don’t get it twisted, Dc2trill is not just another SoundCloud rapper with a big co-sign.

Dc2trill’s July 25 release “Family Matters” is one of the most entertaining and enjoyable projects to come out this year. Packing 12 songs into just under 30 minutes, Dc2trill knows how to make the most out of his time on the microphone. Paired with a trio of equally entertaining music videos, “Family Matters” is a textbook example of a successful roll-out, and credit has to be given to Yachty and his Concrete Boys team.

There’s moments where Dc will leave you crying of laughter, like his outlandish declarations on “B.R.A Freestyle,” and moments where he’ll have you ascending to a higher plane, like the hypnotic bridge on “A Purple Matter.” The nods to Sade, Billie Mays, and Keanu Reeves make this project feel like the amalgamation of the last 30 years of pop-culture. Flexing his eclectic taste, Trill is able to merge the modern, punched-in Detroit flows with 80’s smooth jazz on the hilariously titled “Grooviest in the World.”

The Detroit vibes are definitely present across the project, especially with Trill  employing Michigan icon Babyface Ray on the “Smooth Operator” remix, as well as newcomer G.T on “No Pardens.” His choice of features on the album are effective, and Dc proves he doesn’t need a big name artist to get people interested. Instead, he plays into the album’s title, inviting Concrete Boys signee KARRAHBOOO and of course, Lil Yachty himself.

While the majority of the beats tend to stay fairly minimalist, Dc2trill is able to rely on his different vocal inflections and entertaining bars to keep the album engaging. That being said, the soulful and psychedelic instrumental on “A Purple Matter” and the jazzy “Grooviest in the World” still might go down as some of the best beats this year. Check out Dc2trill’s “Family Matters,” out now on all streaming platforms via Concrete Boys.
