ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: QUINNIE
Let me be clear and straight to the point: when I, a 22 year old straight man, wake up every morning for 4 days to immediately play a song about receiving oral sex from a gentle guy, and from the perspective of a girl, I feel like that is a good indicator of how truly transcendent the music of quinnie is.
For the past week, it seems like everyone in the music business has asked the same question: "Who is this girl?" (at least, unless you’re like us, who have been following her since early 2021, and were able to enjoy her and accomplished producer Jake Weinberg’s side project, CRITTER, along the way). This is because quinnie is one of the fastest rising acts we’ve seen since the beginning of this publication, with her new track, "touch tank," receiving over a million streams in less than 72 hours. 72 HOURS. Her monthly listeners accompanied this jump, moving quickly from 50k to 348k; the kind of move that makes managers like me say “holy $#!+,” outloud. Even more noteworthy, is the fact that she is donating all of these first week streaming profits to the Indigenous Rising Women Abortion Fund, during a time in the United States where that is much needed. We can only hope that this compassionate and selfless move will be followed by her industry peers.
Her music has never, ever, been done before. It’s like if The Beatles or Suki Waterhouse wanted to experiment with profane lyrics, while still remaining tasteful. It’s raw, and in some moments, even vulgar, but it’s also beautiful, vulnerable, and addictive. It’s soulful singer-songwriter meets punk. It’s not uncommon for her to say things like “Get your head out of your cock, read a book or take a walk.” It is this experimental triumph of lyricism and melody that has allowed her to become the 5th most searched artist on Genius this week. She deserves it, too.
With all of these things considered, it’s no surprise why people are jumping on the quinnie bandwagon as soon as they hear her first stanza. I’m positive you will, too. I do ask, however, that you also go back and listen to CRITTER, one of my favorite projects of the past 2 years within the indie realm. Mick Jagger and PFC are two MUSTS.
